A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed a repository contributor to cause the appliance to issue requests to attacker-controlled internal hosts, which could be chained to achieve remote code execution on the appliance. The secret scanning validator for GCP service account credentials trusted the token endpoint embedded in a committed credential and issued a request to it without restricting the destination. Exploitation required an authenticated user with permission to push to a repository on an instance with GitHub Advanced Security and secret scanning validity checks enabled, a non-default configuration. This vulnerability affected GitHub Enterprise Server 3.20, 3.21, and 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.20.9, 3.21.7, and 3.22.2. This vulnerability was reported through the GitHub Bug Bounty program.Show less

A missing authorization vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed a repository collaborator with write access to delete the current default branch through the GraphQL API and cause an attacker-controlled branch to become the new default. In repositories that required pull-request review but did not restrict branch deletion, this bypassed the review requirement and caused fresh clones and default-branch API requests to use attacker-controlled content. This vulnerability affected supported GitHub Enterprise Server releases in the 3.18, 3.19, 3.20, 3.21, and 3.22 series and was fixed in versions 3.18.16, 3.19.13, 3.20.9, 3.21.7, and 3.22.2. This vulnerability was reported via the GitHub Bug Bounty program.Show less

A server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in the notebook viewer of GitHub Enterprise Server. The notebook viewer validated the scheme and host of a user-supplied URL but did not validate the port, allowing requests to be directed to internal services listening on other ports of the same appliance. Response bodies were not returned to the requester, but response timing acted as an oracle that allowed instance secrets to be extracted character by character. An extracted secret could then be used in a separate interaction with an internal service to obtain remote code execution on the appliance. Exploitation required network access to the instance and was unauthenticated when private mode was disabled, or required any authenticated user when private mode was enabled. This vulnerability affected GitHub Enterprise Server versions 3.17 through 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.22.1, 3.21.6, 3.20.8, 3.19.12, 3.18.15, and 3.17.21. This vulnerability was reported through the GitHub Bug Bounty program.Show less

A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an authenticated attacker to inject arbitrary HTML attributes into rendered Markdown because the Markdown rendering pipeline rewrote quote characters in already-sanitized HTML without re-sanitizing the result. Crafted Markdown could abuse same-origin JavaScript gadgets to bypass Content Security Policy and gain control of the page DOM when viewed by another user. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to read content visible to the victim, extract embedded CSRF tokens, perform state-changing actions as the victim, and exfiltrate data through same-origin writes. The payload could also propagate to repositories and organizations where the victim had write access. This vulnerability affected supported GitHub Enterprise Server releases in the 3.17, 3.18, 3.19, 3.20, 3.21, and 3.22 series and was fixed in versions 3.22.1, 3.21.6, 3.20.8, 3.19.12, 3.18.15, and 3.17.21. This vulnerability was reported via the GitHub Bug Bounty program.Show less

An authorization bypass vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed any authenticated user of the instance to read the raw diff or patch of pull requests in private repositories without authorization. Access tokens for raw pull request diffs and patches were scoped to the repository name and pull request number rather than to a globally unique repository identifier, so an attacker who created a repository and pull request matching a target's repository name and pull request number could use a token for their own repository to retrieve the private pull request's contents. Exploitation required the attacker to know the target repository's name and a valid pull request number. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.17.21, 3.18.15, 3.19.12, 3.20.8, and 3.21.6. A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed remote code execution on the instance. Insufficient network isolation allowed malicious pre-receive hook code to impersonate an internal service and redirect trusted internal requests to a privileged service, leading to elevated code execution. Exploitation required pre-receive hook networking to be enabled and either site administrator privileges or write access to a repository containing a configured pre-receive hook. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.17.20, 3.18.14, 3.19.11, 3.20.7, and 3.21.5. A server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an unauthenticated attacker to cause the Manage API to send crafted outbound requests to an attacker-controlled host. An unauthenticated endpoint parsed an attacker-supplied cluster configuration and issued gateway-to-agent requests whose HMAC authenticated only a timestamp, not the request path or body. An attacker positioned to intercept the outbound request could capture this token and replay it against privileged management agent endpoints. High-availability deployments were not affected due to a topology restriction. This vulnerability affected GitHub Enterprise Server releases in the 3.17, 3.18, 3.19, 3.20, and 3.21 series and was fixed in versions 3.17.21, 3.18.15, 3.19.12, 3.20.8, and 3.21.6. A denial of service vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an unauthenticated attacker to cause excessive CPU consumption and exhaust the pool of request-handling worker processes by sending a crafted form-encoded HTTP POST request containing deeply nested parameters. Because request parameters were parsed before routing and authentication, any POST endpoint could be used to trigger the condition, which could render the instance unresponsive. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.21 and was fixed in versions 3.20.3, 3.19.7, 3.18.10, and 3.17.16.Show less

A path traversal vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an unauthenticated attacker to delete arbitrary files and directories on the instance, including the entire user storage directory containing Git LFS objects, release assets, attachments, and avatars. The X-GitHub-Request-Id request header was used without sanitization as a filesystem path segment for the upload buffer directory, so a traversal value pointed the buffer at an arbitrary path and the deferred cleanup routine recursively removed the traversed target. Exploitation required only network reachability to the instance and no authentication, and it worked even when private mode was enabled. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.21.4, 3.20.6, 3.19.10, 3.18.13 and 3.17.19. An incorrect authorization vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed a user-to-server token scoped to a GitHub App installation to perform certain write operations on public repositories outside the token's intended scope. This was possible because the authorization check only verified that the installation had read permissions on the target repository rather than verifying that the token's installation was explicitly granted access to that repository. An attacker who obtained a victim's user-to-server token could create issues, issue comments, commit comments, and private vulnerability reports on any public repository, appearing as the victim user with no indication of the app involvement. This vulnerability was fixed by adding a repository scope check for user-to-server tokens issued by global apps. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.22 and was fixed in versions 3.21.2, 3.20.4, 3.19.8, 3.18.11, 3.17.17, 3.16.20. A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in another user's browser by injecting a crafted payload into the title of a Discussion in the Q&A category. The AnsweredQuestionStructuredDataComponent did not escape user-controlled Discussion titles before embedding them in a <script type="application/ld+json"> block, allowing the title to break out of the script context. The injection was escalated to a full cross-site scripting attack on GitHub Enterprise Server by leveraging JSONP callback support in the REST API to bypass the Content Security Policy. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.21 and was fixed in versions 3.20.4, 3.19.8, 3.18.11, 3.17.17, 3.16.20. A missing authorization vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an authenticated user to read source code from private repositories they did not have access to. The Copilot pull request description diff summary endpoint accepted a cross-repository comparison range and rendered the resulting diff without verifying that the requesting user was authorized to view the target repository. Exploitation required an authenticated account on the instance with read access to at least one repository to use as the comparison base. A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an attacker to cause the server to issue HTTP requests to internal services via the security advisories package lookup feature. By directing requests to an internal management service and measuring response timing, an attacker could infer the values of sensitive environment variables, including signing secrets and private keys. Exploitation required GitHub Packages to be enabled; on instances not running in private mode the vulnerability was exploitable without authentication, otherwise any authenticated user could exploit it. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.21.1 and was fixed in versions 3.20.3, 3.19.7, 3.18.10, 3.17.16, and 3.16.19. A reflected HTML injection vulnerability was identified in the GitHub Enterprise Server Management Console login page that could allow credential theft. The redirect_to query parameter on the /setup/unlock endpoint was reflected into an HTML attribute without proper sanitization, enabling an attacker to inject a form element that could capture administrator credentials. Exploitation required an administrator to click a crafted link and enter their credentials. This vulnerability affected GitHub Enterprise Server versions 3.19.1 through 3.19.5 and 3.20.0 through 3.20.1, and was fixed in versions 3.19.6 and 3.20.2. A server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability was identified in the GitHub Enterprise Server notebook viewer that allowed an attacker to access internal services by exploiting URL parser confusion between the validation layer and the HTTP request library. The hostname validation used a different URL parser than the request library, enabling a crafted URL to pass validation while directing the request to an unintended host. Exploitation required network access to the GitHub Enterprise Server instance. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.21 and was fixed in versions 3.16.18, 3.17.15, 3.18.9, 3.19.6, and 3.20.2. An authentication bypass vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed an unauthenticated attacker to create a local user account, bypassing the configured external identity provider. When external authentication was enabled, the signup endpoint did not properly enforce the authentication restriction, allowing account creation and session establishment without identity provider validation. The created account was limited to the default base permissions configured on the instance. Exploitation required network access to a GHES instance configured with an external authentication provider. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server prior to 3.21 and was fixed in versions 3.20.2, 3.19.6, 3.18.9, 3.17.15, and 3.16.18.Show less
